Master Grazier Spotlight: Jim Burrus
A Legacy of Grazing Excellence and Community Impact
The Illinois Grazing Lands Coalition proudly recognized Jim Burrus as a 2024 Master Grazier, honoring the late farmer’s exceptional contributions to sustainable grazing and the agricultural community. Jim’s influence extended far beyond his farm in Morgan County, leaving a lasting impact on the way grazing is practiced in Illinois. Jim and his wife Mary were also recipients of other distinguished honors like the 2006 IBA Environmental Steward of the Year and the 2014 Morgan County Conservation Farm Family of the year.
Jim’s commitment to conservation and grazing was evident in every aspect of his farming operation. His decision to integrate rotational grazing on his 400-acre farm transformed the health of his soil, water, and livestock. This shift not only improved the productivity of his operation but also set a powerful example for other producers in the region.
“Building better soil has been a priority of mine for as long as I can remember. We don’t fertilize our pastures or apply pesticides because they kill the life in the soil. There is an inter-connectedness between microbes in the soil, microbes in the plants, and microbes in the gut of the animals,” said Jim.
One of Jim's greatest contributions to the grazing community was his dedication to sharing knowledge. He became a trusted resource for fellow farmers who were interested in transitioning to grazing systems, offering his farm as a learning site for pasture walks and workshops. Jim’s willingness to mentor others helped foster a growing interest in grazing and regenerative agriculture across Illinois.
Also evident throughout Jim’s career was his was his commitment to lifelong learning and the tenacity to find profitable grazing systems that were good for his cattle and his land. He continually adjusted his farming practices throughout this decades long career, demonstrating the adaptive nature of rotational grazing and a willingness to learn and improve year over year. “That’s what makes rotational grazing so complex and so wonderful,” remarked Jim.
At the heart of Jim’s success was his deep understanding of how grazing management could improve both his farm’s bottom line and the environment. His rotational grazing practices allowed him to optimize pasture health, ensuring his cattle had access to high-quality forage while reducing soil erosion and improving water infiltration. These practices not only benefited his farm, but also contributed to the health of the local ecosystem.
Jim’s legacy lives on through his contributions to Illinois agriculture and his commitment to conservation. His work serves as a reminder that thoughtful, sustainable farming practices can leave a lasting impact on the land and on future generations of farmers.
The Illinois Grazing Lands Coalition is proud to have honored Jim Burrus with the 2024 Master Grazier Award, recognizing his lifetime of dedication to sustainable agriculture, mentorship, and community service. His life’s work remains an inspiration to all who are dedicated to building a more resilient and sustainable agricultural system.
